Moeller’s PLC Starter Kit has Room for Expansion

[picture of XI/ON PLC] Now available in the form of a starter kit that offers big cost savings, Moeller Electric’s XN-ECO PLC combines compact construction and value for money with excellent facilities for expansion, using slice-design I/O modules from Moeller’s popular and comprehensive XI/ON-ECO range.

The XN-ECO starter kit, which has a list price of just £299, includes an XN-PLC-CANOPEN PLC module, three eight-channel XI/ON digital input modules and two eight-channel XI/ON digital output modules.

The hardware is complemented by a copy of the full version of Moeller's XSOFT Professional Window-based programming package that offers users a wide choice of programming techniques, all conforming to IEC61131-1. In addition, the package includes the I/O Assistant configuration and diagnostics tool, which makes set up, commissioning and fault finding fast and straightforward.

Despite its small physical size, the PLC module included in the kit is exceptionally versatile. It has a memory capacity of 128Kbytes for program and 96Kbytes for data. All memory is implemented with Flash technology that eliminates the need for batteries and, therefore, for routine maintenance.

The module has an integral realtime clock, and a CanOpen interface, that can be used for program entry, and which allows easy connection to fieldbus systems. The availability of this interface makes the XN-ECO PLC equally suitable for use as a standalone device, or as an intelligent remote I/O subsystem in a larger installation. The XN-ECO PLC also has an RS232 interface for convenient on-site diagnostic access and program entry.

The I/O capacity of the starter kit can be expanded by adding up to 69 extra XI/ON I/O modules to the five which are supplied. Just 12.5mm wide, each of these high-density modules supports either 8 or 16 inputs or outputs, depending on the version chosen. All types have integrated spring terminals, eliminating the need for separate terminals and providing further space savings.

These benefits mean that very compact and cost-effective control systems can readily be implemented with the XN-ECO PLC, even in applications where large numbers of inputs and outputs are needed.
