xStart: Efficient Solutions for Motor Control

[picture of xStart units] Moeller has launched a new series of motor control gear. Called xStart, the range includes DILA contactor relays, DILM contactors, Z overload relays, PKZM motor-protective circuit breakers and MSC motor-starters.

The new DILM contactors are significantly more compact than their predecessors, even with an integrated auxiliary contact up to the 32A size. Four frame sizes now cover the range up to 150A, as against seven previously.

The DC contactors are now the same size as their AC counterparts, have an integrated suppresser and can be actuated directly from a PLC. The space saving is achieved not just by the reduced component dimensions, but also thanks to lower heat dissipation that, particularly with the DC contactors, helps keep the panel or enclosure size down and the saves the cost of a fan. The DC contactors, from 17 up to 65A, have a sealing power consumption of only 0.5W and even those at 150A only use 1.5W.

The contactors feature box terminals with two terminal spaces, allowing differing cable cross-sections to be terminated securely. What is more, the coil connections are easily accessible, being located at the front. The voltage tolerance of the xStart contactors is much greater than is required by the IEC/EN 60 947standard and ensures effective protection in the event of under and over voltage.

The contactors are perfectly complemented with the DILA contactor relays – available as a basic unit with four auxiliary contacts, this can be extended to eight with use of top mounting auxiliary modules.

The new DILM contactors are initially available up to 15kW, AC-3/400V – well over 80% of all three-phase motors are rated up to this size. The range will be extended in two further steps with contactors rated up to 75kW.

The MSC motor-starters comprise of a PKZM0 motor-protective circuit-breaker and xStart contactor. Both devices are mechanically interconnected via a plug-in element. The electrical connection is provided by a plug-in contact element, which utilises the unique tool-less plug connection technology. Costs for fitting can be considerably reduced with the use of this technology. Another advantage lies in increased safety during maintenance work where removal of the combination plug connector provides a visible isolating gap. DOL and reversing versions of these starters are available up to 15kW, AC-3/400V.
