Modular I/O – XI/ON Modules

Gateway[picture of XI/ON Gateway]

The key to XI/ON's concept is the gateway, i.e. the connection between the fieldbus and the I/O modules. On one hand, it is responsible for handling the process data on the bus, and on the other, it generates diagnostic information for the higher level control system, as well as for the diagnostics software, I/Oassistant.

The gateway represents the interface between the I/O and standard fieldbus systems, e.g. PROFIBUS DP, DeviceNet, CANopen and INTERBUS. Furthermore, the gateways are open for future technology.

Changing the fieldbus system means only the gateway needs to be replaced; the existing I/O field level remains unchanged.

Power distribution modules[picture of XI/ON Power Distribution module]

Designed as a supply terminal and available in slice technology, the individual power distribution modules are responsible for supplying the I/O modules and the gateway with the required voltage (24V DC or 120/230V AC). This means that you no longer have to connect a supply voltage to each individual module. Depending on the application, you can design tailor-made blocks of I/O with an alternative voltage potential by using separate power distribution modules.

Electronics modules[picture of XI/ON Electronic modules in slice design]

The electronics modules contain the I/O functionality, and communicate with the gateway via an internal module bus. They are, therefore, not dependent on the higher level fieldbus system. The electronics module is simply plugged onto the base module and is then ready for operation. In the case of faults or maintenance tasks, simply replace the electronics module. The field connection level remains connected.

The electronics modules are available with a wide range of functions as one-, two- and four-channel slices, or as 16- or 32-channel blocks. Project planning can now be carried out precisely because you can plan the exact number of channels that you actually require.

In short: modularity, fieldbus independence and a comprehensive choice of functions.

Base modules[picture of XI/ON Base module in slice design]

Without the electronics module, the base modules basically represents the connection for the field wiring.

Designed and constructed terminal block, it provides the reliability that you expect from a modern connection technology. The base modules are available in /3-, 4- and 4 × 2-/3-wire technology, as well with tension clamp or screw connection. The same slice and block concept as with the electronics modules has also been applied here. The base modules are simply snapped onto the mounting rail.

The benefit: you purchase only the required number of channels, and only the required!

Easy identification

Each type of electronics module has its own colour. When you see, for example, a blue module mounting rail, you can be sure it is an analogue input module.

In addition to the type identification, the connection type is also printed on the cover.

Electronics modules can also be fitted with labels.

[picture of XI/ON jumper]Jumpers

The jumpers (QVR) are simplicity themselves: by interconnecting the base modules, the need for wiring is reduced and error sources are eliminated. Benefit: you need only one voltage source and only one protection system.

By using relay modules with a special base module you can feed in a supply directly without the need for separate Power Feeding module.

[picture of XI/ON mounting slot coding]Mounting slot coding

The mechanical coding allows you to assign base modules to the groups according to the electronics modules. This means that when fitted for the first time, the base module is assigned a unique electronics module group. This prevents damage when the wrong module is fitted after replacement is carried out. The mounting slot on the base module can also be fitted with a dekafix label.

Marking components[picture of XI/ON marking components]

The unmarked base modules can be labelled in each connecting level according to your needs by fitting coloured markers, which are available as accessories.

The shield connection is used to connect the shield when PROFIBUS DP is connected to a XI/ON gateway via direct wiring.

End plate[picture of XI/ON end plate and bracket]

The end plate is placed to the right of a XI/ON station. An end bracket is integrated into the end plate and fits directly on to the mounting rail.

The end plate covers all open contacts of the last base module on the right-hand side of a XI/ON station, and is designed to secure the entire station on the mounting rail.

Online with I/Oassistant – universal software

The I/Oassistant software provides you with an online universal tool that supports you interactively during the entire planning and implementation process of your XI/ON plant. You can point and click to create and structure your project on-screen. The software permits you to select the required gateway, base modules, electronics modules and accessories. The individual stations can be configured and parameters can be set online or offline.

And when you're ready, you can put your machine or plant into operation. The I/Oassistant checks the stations, imports process data or outputs values. Diagnostic information is displayed. A software program that needs to be seen to be believed.

You can download the offline version of the I/Oassistant software using the link below.

The offline version offers the following features:

  • Project examples.
  • Creating, structuring and expanding projects on-screen.
  • Realistic display of Moeller I/O products.
  • Station plausibility testing.
  • Configuring and setting of parameters for individual stations in offline mode.
  • Detailed project documentation.
  • Online Help.

The full version of the I/Oassistant software offers the following additional features:

  • Online configuration and parameter setting of individual stations.
  • Production of station-specific GSD-files.
  • Commissioning of stations.
  • Reading and setting process data.
  • Diagnostics and troubleshooting.
  • Downloading new firmware to a XI/ON station.
  • Resetting a XI/ON station.

The full version of the I/Oassistant software can be ordered separately or as I/Oassistant package (including CD-ROM and connection cable for connection to the service interface of the XI/ON-Gateway). Please, see the catalogue supplement XI/ON – the modular I/O system for ordering data.
